Description

Al‑Anon Family Groups is a mutual support program for people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. By sharing common experiences and applying the Al-Anon principles, families and friends of alcoholics can bring positive changes to their individual situations, whether or not the alcoholic admits the existence of a drinking problem or seeks help.

The Al-Anon program is based on the Twelve Steps (adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous), which we try, little by little, one day at a time, to apply to our lives, along with our slogans and the Serenity Prayer. The loving interchange of help among members and daily reading of Al-Anon literature thus make us ready to receive the priceless gift of serenity.

The official mobile app of the Al-Anon Family Groups is designed to provide an easy way for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking to find hope and help, whether they can attend a face-to-face meeting or not.

Features include:
- Al-Anon meetings powered by Zoom with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance enabled. In the app you will see this added security is identified by a green shield inside the meeting. The HIPAA compliance provides the following additional securities:
-- Disallows cloud recordings
-- Forces out of meeting chat encryption on
-- Forces encryption for 3rd party endpoints
-- Disables streaming to any service that only supports RTMP
-- Prevents copying or saving meeting chats

- An opportunity to connect with Al-Anon friends and chat privately with them
- A built-in private journal, which you can use to track your recovery
- A news feed where you can share with your Al-Anon friends what is on your mind; you can also view what’s on your friends’ minds.
- An opportunity to subscribe to a daily dose of Al-Anon members’ experience, strength, and hope.
- An opportunity to easily contribute to the World Service Office.

Has potential

I think this was deployed to market before it really had any true features that would be useful out of the gate. I would like to see a bunch of features that aren’t available now: past international convention speakers, face2face meeting list, a button to submit a new zoom meeting for inclusion on the list, instructions for setting up a zoom meeting that can be included on the list, sponsor info, how long in program, daily gratitude list that can be shared, nightly inventory that can be shared, prayers, daily recovery score (points for step work, program calls, reading, journaling, recovery work with partner, etc.) that can be shared.

There are tons of far more useful recovery apps out there - I hope this one is under development for a long time to catch up.

FloAnn, thank you for your feedback. This is our first attempt at a mobile app, and it is progress not perfection. We will be looking at ways to provide other Al-Anon resources available through the app. New electronic meetings for use in the Al-Anon Family Groups mobile app can register via al-anon.org/mobileapp

Needed improvements

Newcomers arrive daily with the exact same questions. How do I get on a meeting here? What book should I start with? Can you give me advice? What are these steps? How do I find an in person meeting? How do I find a sponsor? I wish there were newcomer tabs with explanations to these frequently asked questions. Please! These questions have specific answers which someone can easily answer in a newcomer tab. The content is getting exhausting answering the same question over and over then it’s lost in the feed and another person shows up. Can someone create Threads? How to join an online meeting thread? Sponsor thread? Then the new Sponsor info meetings can be added to that thread. Books for newcomers thread with a little explanation of the book- daily meditation or a grief book? How to donate directly to WSO thread? Service Thread? Service training meetings can be added to that thread. Advice thread? Why we don’t give advice?
I’m giving WSO advice right now to update this website with threads to organize the information. 😂🤪

Thank you for your suggestions and kind review! There are many tools to assist the newcomer and the questions you raise, which are all valid. Our Service Manual and al-anon.org website may help. Our Mobile App does not replace those resources. Please reach out to us at afgmobile@al-anon.org to help further. We strive to continually improve our resources, thank you for your feedback!

Amazing!

This app is very easy to use, it’s been life changing having this fellowship at my fingertips. You can join any meeting simply by clicking, and if you prefer to remain anonymous and not on camera, you have that option. I was once driving my car and feeling so upset that I had to pull over, and I actually joined a meeting while sitting in the drivers seat. I’ve joined some meetings that have had +130 participants from all over the world, it’s incredible to know that this app is connecting people globally. I rate this app a 10/10 and highly recommend to anyone looking for some semblance of hope and serenity - life is too short and complicated, this app and the participants will help make some of life’s challenges seem less impossible. I managed to convince my mom to try it - she is the opposite of tech savvy - and now she’s been to 30 mtgs in 30 days and is loving it!
